Kill me now.
May. 4th, 2006 01:08 pmNo. Noooo no no..... Argh!
Okay, SEGA, stop killing everything Sonic ever was ;_; Seriously. Stop it. NOW!!
I am pissed and upset. Yeah, maybe I don't have much of a life, to care so much... but... IT BUGS ME >O
Sonic is going to be 5'10" in the Next Gen Sonic game. They gave him human proportions and made him taller than I am! That's... not right! Sonic is supposed to be small... He was cool because he didn't need to be human-sized in order to kick butt. Having him be human-sized is just TOO weird. I just can't fathom it, to be honest.
There's also going to be a new rival hedgehog... a cream colored hedgehog that looks a lot like Sonic :\ Great, all we need, ANOTHER Sonic look-a-like rival character!
Oh, and Sonic is "the Iblis Trigger", some kinda chosen one who can summon the Devil or something. Jei said the whole plot is sounding like something out of a Final Fantasy game. Whilst FF may be very cool, Sonic is NOT FF. Gyah! It's like they're just... changing EVERYTHING about Sonic and the fandom. Right now I really can't see much 'old-school' about that game at all... in fact, it barely even feels like a Sonic game, aside from in name :\ Screw you, SEGA ._.
Oh yeah, and the fourth playable character in the new Sonic Rivals game for PSP has been confirmed as... wait for it... ANOTHER NEW CHARACTER!! 'Cause we need more new characters, oh yes. >.>
::Sigh:: This is not good. The Sonic fandom is heading in a direction that just feels so different from what I'm used to. There's not much left to cling to... it's all changed, all different... all so much the same as every other fandom out there now. It's so divorced from what it once was.
Gonna go mope now :\

And I don't like angst in Sonic games... :P At least not excessive angst. For me, the games are about having fun, not getting sucked down into a dark abyss of heaviness and gloom.
Re: Heh...
Date: 2006-05-04 02:00 pm (UTC)For me, the Sonic games aren't about being sucked down into angst... it's about triumphing over it. I recently decided to pass up Sonic Riders because the only modicum of angst in it involves Jet's family life. Jet doesn't deal with this angst, it's only alluded to to establish the whole Bablyon Rogues stuff.
And the reason I love Shadow (the game) is not because of Shadow's eternal angst about his life--it's becuase of Sonic's descent into despair and the restoration of his hope. The keyword being the restoration of his hope. Like a great many Sonic fans, I've had a fairly rough life... And many times I've wished that, just once, I could beat the problems that came at me instead of waiting for them to go away. That's why Sonic, especially the Post-Adventure games and the Archie comics, have appealed to me: Sonic the Hedgehog is the story of unlikely heroes rising to terrible occasions and saving the world and their own hearts from the darkness that surrounds them.
And really, I don't see the point in all this mystical stuff if Sonic and the gang aren't tied into it. They've been throwing it at us for years--the Chaos emeralds, the rings, the floating Island. The later additions of Chaos, the Black Arms, and Babylon really just follow a trend. But it begs the question--why is it that Sonic is one of the only characters who regularly goes Super? Why doesn't Eggman do it? Why haven't Tails or Knuckles done it more often? Why did Shadow nearly die in the attempt? This has been foreshadowed since the beginning of the fandom--and the idea of Sonic being a chosen one doesn't remove his free will. If he wanted to, he could chose not to be. Hell, maybe he's the chosen one BECAUSE of the choices that he makes.
You say it's cliche, but I disagree. It's far too common and standard to be cliche--it's archetypical. The difference between Sonic and the other "chosen one" stuff, though, is the quality of it all, and the character of Sonic. Sonic is a truly independent character, with a sense of free will and an attitude that, while noble, isn't exactly pious. It's a new twist on an old archetype, a twist that a portion of the fandom has been waiting for for years... ten years, in my case.
And fully anthro furries bother me less than Sonic-style ones. As long as they aren't graphically naked (Cartoon nudity, like Sonic-tachi, is fine), I don't care. I play Furcadia sometimes, if that says anything.
Re: Heh...
Date: 2006-05-04 02:16 pm (UTC)I just really feel that changing his height to human proportions is just another step towards making him, and the whole Sonic universe, more human. And I don't like that at all. I noticed it worst of all in Shadow's game... the guns and cars... all the kinda of stuff you'd get in a game like GTA. BLEH! I don't like that the Sonic world suddenly became almost identical to our world, too. The Sonic Adventure games, whilst fun, bugged me a LOT because it was a world populated by humans. Humans. Everywhere. Cities. Cars. Just like our world. I just kinda feel like... why bother having animal heroes in a world that's just like our own?
I loved when the games only had one human in them - Eggman. He represented what humans have done to this planet. The main characters were always the animals. Whether anthro, or just little woodland creatures trapped inside the machines.
Suddenly it all became too much like our planet is now, too human-oriented. And THAT's what really bugs me.

Date: 2006-05-04 02:20 pm (UTC)I'm just a different breed of fan, I suppose. Something about Sonic has always resonated with me, and that something hasn't left the series, it's simply changed, evolved into something new. I see the same darkness in the Post-Adventure games as I did in the Archie comics--the form it took was different, but its essence is the same. And that darkness, and the struggle between it and the light in each of the characters, is what makes the series enjoyable for me, so long as the light wins out in the end.
