Anyhow! Did any of you guys see all the YTMND vs SEGA Europe stuff? Some of you over on
sonicstuff might've seen the post that was made regarding it. Basically, Max (owner of YTMND) received a cease and desist letter from SEGA Europe's legal team in regards to a 'Sonic Says'-based YTMND page titled 'Sonic Gives Advice On Rape'. As per the usual YTMND style, the page was in incredibly bad taste (and no I'm not linking it, though it's easy enough to find) and not actually funny at all. But anyway. SEGA Europe got a little riled and threatened legal action within seven days if the Sonic YTMNDs weren't taken down. YTMND responded with this rap (<--Warning: Not Safe For Work!). Then a million anti-SEGA YTMNDs cropped up over the next few days. Max seems complacent. Tomorrow is seven days from the date of the c&d. What will happen?
My take on it:
I don't like YTMND. Most of the pages that get made there are unbearably lame and serve no other purpose than to mock, and usually via poorly made gifs and cliché soundbites. HOWEVER, blasphemous as it may seem, I am totally on YTMND's side with this.
SEGA Europe are pathetic for suing YTMND over this.
They must really need the money, heh! I mean, it's ridiculous. Their c&d suggests that people might get confused and misinformedly believe that the stuff on YTMND is somehow endorsed by SEGA. Uh-huh. They must have a LOW opinion of their consumers' intelligence if they honestly believe that any significant number of people are going to view that page and think "My Gosh! SEGA are joking about rape using Sonic mascot characters!" ... ha, no. Really, it's just SEGA Europe getting their panties in a twist because people are mocking Sonic X and the Sonic franchise in general. Big. Effing. Deal. You don't see them complaining about copyright when it benefits THEM. Heck, they encourage fanartas long as it's not hate art or *gasp* PG13+ or suggestive of gayness >.> But even with some of the worse stuff out there, you don't see them coming down on it the way they're coming down on YTMND.
And you know what's REALLY ironic? YTMND wasn't really making any money out of their Sonic mockery until SEGA Europe came along XD; It's only now, because of the controversy, that a lot of Sonic/SEGA YTMNDs are on the front page and being sponsored by fans. So yeah, now it IS kinda illegal. But it's SEGA Europe's own fault :\ Why is SEGA's Europe branch getting involved with an American website anyway?
I'd just like to say, also, that the YTMND vs SEGA rap is FUNNY. I don't think there was a need to use 'f**king' for every other word in the in-between spoken bits, but the main rap is actually really well done and cracks me up. Fully confess. And some of the other Sonic-related YTMNDs that have sprung up as a result of all this are pretty hilarious too. Hah.
In the end, you know it could all be a giant spoof. Max could've penned the letter himself (if he did, he's a GENIUS!). Either way, it's funny and if it's true, DAMN, SEGA. O.o

But yeah, I agree, if I sued everyone who didn't like me I'd be as rich as Bill Gates, seriously

Date: 2007-01-17 10:38 pm (UTC)But this is almost as bad as those lawsuits Sony gave Luk Sang for importing Japanese PSP's when they weren't losing out on money anyway o.O;;; It was because they "did it without permission" from what I beleive
This whole YMTD thing doesn't come too far off, even though I hate YMTD

Date: 2007-01-18 07:48 am (UTC)Still, I can't help but wonder why it's just YTMND they're picking on though, I mean, there are THOUSANDS of other sites with Sonic content on. YouTube just to name one.
The serious business of the Internet.
Favre: I'd doubt it, though they're gaining free publicity from this, as well.

Date: 2007-01-19 09:06 am (UTC)SEGA must have very bored people. Actually, they both seem very very bored.
