"I'm scared of lightning!"

flyboy_foxJei and I watched the Sonic OVA last night. I haven't watched it in forever, and I was surprised at how hard the nostalgia hit me. I love that movie, god I do.
It basically has my favourite characterisation of Sonic and Tails out of all the Sonic media out there. They're like an old married couple, seriously. The opening sequence where Tails is trying out his newly built water board is just gold. Sonic is a total and utter prick, but you can't really blame him. Him yelling at Tails to shut up and Tails yelling at him that Sonic is no help a little later is just hilariously funny to me for some reason. (I think in the Japanese version he calls Sonic 'baka!', which is even funnier).
Yet they are totally a solid tag-team. Best friends, no doubt (even though Knuckles amusingly refers to himself as Sonic's "best friend" later on. Then again, Knuckles is referred to as a mole, so...). When Sonic and Tails are both making fun of Metal Robotnik together while dodging his attacks, I can't help just grinning. Also, Tails can move really fast in the OVA! Not as fast as Sonic, naturally, but fast enough to use the same 'disappear, reappear' effect that Sonic uses. Kick ass.
Knuckles is a bit... odd in this movie. Mainly in that he's wearing a hat, seems to be a ground-dwelling mole, and can fly. Not glide, but actually take off from the ground and fly up. Bizarre. But his friendly rivalry with Sonic remains intact and he's actually a really likeable character, completing the Triple Threat for much win.
And then there's the thing that gave me the most chills of all. The Tornado. In all her glory. Oh god, I love that plane so damn much. I just want to steal it right out of that movie. It's so beautiful and awesome. Was kinda funny how, after the crash land in the Land of Darkness, Sonic asks Tails if he's alright and Tails is just worried about the Tornado. Which is upside down. Because Tails is an awesome pilot but can't land a plane to save his life. Or so Jei insists. I think it was an appropriate landing given the turbulence! Oh, but none of that is as funny as watching Knuckles gluing the Tornado back together like some kind of hired help handyman. Not bad, considering the plane was pretty much blown up by this point?
I won't bother mentioning the voices, because anything I say would be redundant. All I'll say is that I find it easy enough to ignore the odd voice acting choices and focus on the movie/OVA itself because it is a beautiful piece of work.
The only thing I really can't stand is Sera. But I suppose that's pretty much the point of her?

But in all seriousness, Tails and Sonic having a bit of dysfunction in their friendship yet still being able to overcome it sounds pretty adorable. Old married couple indeed.^_~
