Mmgrog. First post of the new year. Hi? o.o

I've been sick since the start of Christmas break, first with migraines and then with a stinking cold (which I'm finally getting over, after about 3 forests' worth of tissues), so I don't really have any epically festive news from the past few weeks. New Year kinda just came and went like any other day, although it was still nice to spend it with Jei, who came back from America on Dec 30th. We're back in Bournemouth now. Jei's classes start again tomorrow, but mine don't start up again until next week, so I have a week of free time, really. It's nice, I guess, but I don't have much idea of what I'm going to do with it. It's too cold to go out anywhere ;_;

Probably the most important thing I wanted to update about is the big change I'm making to my diet this year. I'm going 100% gluten and dairy free. That means no wheat, rye, oat, barley or dairy produce of any kind (cow/goat/sheep cheese, milk, etc). It's a pretty drastic step to take, but I really think it's worth trying. My mom's side of the family has a history of food intolerances (including my grandpa who was lethally allergic to eggs, and a great aunt who was allergic to cow's milk), and my mom has always reacted badly to wheat. I had colic as a baby and couldn't take milk, so I had soya milk through my infancy. I think wheat could be a problem too. It might just be wheat rather than gluten in general, but I'm cutting it all out to begin with just to see what happens. I can try introducing non-wheat glutens (e.g. rye) and/or certain dairy products after a couple of months and then see how it goes, but for now I'm being as strict as if I had coeliac disease - no gluten (or dairy) particles shall enter! I fear I might wind up pissing Jei off with how rigid I'm being about it, but it's the only way. So far, it's only been a few days, but I'm doing fine with it. Asda has some gluten/dairy-free stuff, although not a huge amount. But careful package checking means you can find some stuff that's free from it even if it's not in the 'special' foods area. And of course, plenty of natural ingredients (fruit/veg etc) are naturally gluten-free. The only thing I'm pissed about is how Asda (or at least my local) doesn't stock soya plain yoghurt anymore :\ They have flavored soya yoghurts, soya milk, and even soya custard and soya chocolate blancmange! But no plain yoghurt... urg. Never mind. I still have plenty of good stuff for now ^^

So, Jei and I spent most of today and yesterday just playing through Zelda: OoT (we brought my N64 back with us - OoT and Goldeneye ftw!) and playing around with the human Sonic and Tails dollfie dolls that Jei made XD They're so awesome. Argh.

Oh yeah, and I have a fitness step machine with arm cords, hee! New diet, new exercise regime (it's too cold to walk outside :P), better sleeping hours = new healthier happier Jai! Hopefully :)

Well, that about wraps it up! Happy (rather belated) New Year, everybody!

PS: Since the tattoo place has finished my design, I'm gonna go see 'em to make my appointment this week :D Whee! Can't wait!!

Good luck with the dietary changes. I know how difficult they can be.

Oh yeah, I remember reading some stuff on your LJ about food/diet-related things. Why are you doing them, if you don't mind me asking? Also, do you get your stuff from specialist places or just regular stores?

I don't mind. Mine is for hypoglycemia. The easiest way to explain it is that it's practically the opposite of diabetes. It's almost like my body can't quite get enough sugar; rather than storing too much, it goes through it too quickly.

I can handle a lot of fructose, but very little sucrose or other sugars (even artificial). I've switched largely from white varieties of breads to wheat. I've also had to raise my protein intake, since it seems the best way to keep my sugar levels even (or to get them back up). I normally have peanut butter or peanut butter snack bars handy, since they have a decent amount of sugar and lots of protein. (Protein drinks have also become my friends.)

For my part, I can get most of the foods at regular stores. It does take a lot of label reading, but after a while it's just a matter of looking for key ingredients that you (personally) need to avoid.

I also suggest keeping a food journal for yourself for a little while, if you haven't started already. I only had to do this for about two weeks before I started being able to keep track of it in my head. :) I've been able to incorporate a lot of things, once I was able to single things out individually. Starting with simple meals and then adding things seemed to work well for me, rather than trying to eliminate things from my current eating habits.

Thanks for all the helful info and advice! Keeping a food diary is definitely something I'm going to do for a while - I need to keep track of my mood over time to see if this diet is having any effect, after all! :)

Good luck, Jai.

You are a far greater person than I XD; I eat what I can, when I can, and I'm nowhere near motivated enough to begin to limit it <_< Good luck with that, and the tattoo! LJ demands pictures! X3

After doing that the DJ told me "Seeing a little white guy with a Pikachu shirt on do such an enthusiastic Lil John is quite possibly the funniest thing i've ever seen".
