I have to go sign up for Job Seeker's Allowance today. I feel like such scum, signing on for benefits. I mean, it's not like I'm not trying to get work, because I am! I've applied for more stuff here in 2 months than I did in London in 2 years x.x But still, JSA is 'benefits', and I just feel so cheap for claiming them. My pride wouldn't let me do it, except for the fact that I'm living off my mom and I need to bring in some money to help her. Someone please hire me... ;_; I don't wanna be living off benefits. I wanna feel useful again.

Pshaw! You will be useful, Jai! We all have times when we need to lean on someone else. In return, other people lean on you, and you feel great for helping THEM out. ^_^

Pride can be a major problem sometimes, especially when it comes to things like this. At the same time, those of us who may have "learning difficulties" may find it slightly more difficult to find a part-time job, so I've read.

You're only as useless as you make yourself feel. And I've always been told to think of a rejection as an unappreciation of your skills and talents.

And hey... I'm probably gonna have to go back on a stupid Training Scheme, earning £1.80 an hour for the sake of a summer job. -_-

There is no shame in having to rely on benefits or the like, for in fact, as a student, I too rely on something you could call "benefits" only under the name of a scholarship to help fund the education etc.
(Even though it's only a small amount and even barely covers the monthly health insurance it's still something)

There would be shame if you dropped out of school early, never bothered going back, don't even think of getting a job, and just generally sit asround all day doing nothing.
For in such a situation it's just abusing the system.

There is even a friend I know who fought hard to get all the way towards graduating university as ecologist with impressive marks, but still can't find a job anywhere and has to depend on benefits as well.
Don't think it's just the lower class who needs help, everyone does.

Life is hard enough as it is, so you should accept any support/money you can get to keep you going or you'll truly hit rock bottom sooner or later.
Benefits are there to ensure people have a chance to build up their lives again or give support in such moments, it's not a sign of weakness to accept them if you do so with the same intention as they are given:
To help you get around for the hard times you have now, and help you get back on top as soon as you do find a job.

You're useful to me!

Besides. As you said, it isn't like you're not trying. You're not exactly lying around the house subsisting on benefits as some people do here. You'll find something soon!

Don't feel bad about claiming benefits, this sort of situation is what they're *for*. If you didn't have this option, or if you were in fact too proud to get it, you would just get more and more stressed out and feel worse about the deal with your mom, etc- it's sort of a mental health thing, and you need to be reasonably calm and happy to get a job. ;)

What sorts of jobs are available down there? Depends on what qualifications you have for of course what sorta job you want and what's common in the area

But anyway, don't feel bad about it, seriously, don't. For reasons other people have said
