~In the shade of Avalon~
Apr. 8th, 2007 01:53 pmHappy Easter everyone!
As you probably know, I'm not 'religious' at all... but that doesn't mean Easter is meaningless to me. The symbolism of what appeared to be dead coming back to life is, of course, the ultimate metaphor for Spring. Thus Easter, to me, is a celebration of nature and of the coming-back-to-life after the winter's bleakness. Not that I dislike Winter... not at all! But there really is something magical about the first blooms of Spring... the fresh new leaves and blossoms... the wild flowers beginning to dot the grass... the birds singing and the sun rising earlier and setting later, giving us more hours of precious daylight.
And boy have we been lucky in the UK this Easter break! In the West, anyhow, the weather has been perfect. Clear blue skies, balmy breezes, and temperatures up to 20C/68F. Beautiful. I wish it could stay like this all year 'round.
I just took a walk up Shiplate Lane to the grassy knoll up there, part of a public hiking trail. The view from up there is magnificent. You can see the River Axe twisting through the fields, and the silhouettes of the Mendip Hills rolling beyond... it's the perfect retreat for just sitting, breathing and being. Also, the village was alive with the sound of bell-ringing as the Easter Sunday Service kicked off.
Which reminds me! Wikipedia has an article for Bleadon. The church in the picture is literally just across the street from me. I can see it from my window. Shame about the car in the photo, kinda ruins the picturesque quality of the view ^^; But it really is a beautiful church. It has historical significance too, as waaay back during the reign of Henry VIII, the vicar became a martyr after being hung, drawn and quartered in the village square after refusing to cave in and sign the doctrines acknowledging Henry VIII as head of the church.
The local pub, also just 30 seconds from where I live, dates back to the 16th century.
I'd like to update the Wiki page myself, now that I have good knowledge of the village, but the WikiBots have temporarily autobanned my IP due to someone in the same IP range causing trouble x.o Should only be a 24 hour ban though...
Anyhow, the sun is shining, it's Easter, the day is beautiful and I feel aliiive! I hope my friends are having a great Easter weekend! :)
