Re: LJ/Twitter/FB crap
Sep. 4th, 2010 12:10 pmOkay, well, first off I don't really give a shit if anyone crossposts comments made in my posts to Twitter or FB. I don't see why anyone would want to, but it matters not to me. I don't make Friends Only posts except for in extreeeemely rare cases (and at that, mostly just personal memos), so my privacy isn't at stake here. Most people here know my FB account anyway.
HOWEVER. LiveJournal fucked up big time with this. There's people who DO care if their stuff is crossposted. There's people whose privacy WILL be violated and who ARE worried. I've seen a lot of concern on my Friends List and noticed the inevitable "I'm [such-and-such] over at DreamWidth". So... just in case, I'm over at DW now too, under the same name (flyboy_fox). Jut got done importing all my crap over there.
I don't intend to leave LJ unless there really is a mass exodus, but eh. Best to be prepared because LJ sure is screwing up royally with its userbase lately :D
Bleh, rotten mood >_> *Goes to be generally growly and moody at people and things*

Date: 2010-09-04 10:36 pm (UTC)The only place LJ has fallen down with it is that you can repost your comment on someone's friend locked entry. Which leaves a link back to the entry which people who aren't on the filter wouldn't be able to see anyways. They'd get the usual 'you do not have permission to view this locked entry' page.
I'm not saying LJ hasn't made some bad mistakes with things lately, they've made a couple of doozies, but people are also blowing this completely and utterly out of proportion without actually reading what the feature does. =\
It's really no more insecure than having people on your filters in the first place. Since, really, what's stopping someone who can read your locked entries from screencapping them and putting them on their FB anyways? |D

Date: 2010-09-05 12:00 am (UTC)I can see a legitimate complaint in there somewhere, in the sense that content from a comment may reveal information the OP of a locked post may not want to be available outside of the entry, but ultimately, locking something on LiveJournal is a very basic measure of security at best, and anyone that thinks that what they put on the Internet is in any way truly "private" are sadly fooling themselves.
It takes one malicious person to screencap your entry and publish it anywhere they see fit. The problem, I think, boils down to one scenario needing motivation, and the other only possibly requiring someone to thoughtlessly hit the "repost my comments" button and forgetting about it.

Date: 2010-09-05 04:39 am (UTC)Helens78 on Dreamwidth has a detailed pingback testing report.
Rivkat specifically says that she got a pingback for an entry where s/he was not in the filter, which actually contained the text of the entry. There have been a few other people in comments saying they've received pingbacks in the same manner.

Date: 2010-09-05 09:36 am (UTC)Scroll down to see it, "Open" and "Disabled" are the options.
Pingbacks in simple : If "Open" is the option you have 'checked', LJ will email you if someone links an entry of yours in their personal LJ/community. That's the gist of it. I personally have them disabled.
ETA; Paidmembers post & a news posts (though the news posts don't say much on them.)
