I've been catching up on Archie Sonic a little, and I have to say I kinda like the current arc. I'm a little peeved that the story is exported to Sonic Universe for the follow-up/continuation, but still... I do like Sally and Khan as a couple MUCH better than Sonic/Sally and it's also nice to see Sonic and Tails working so well together again. I also thought it was cool how Tails stopped ye-of-little-faith Khan from destroying 'Iron' Nicole while Sonic and Sally were inside the mainframe battling her. So yeah, 208 and 209 were pretty cool. No idea if/when the next issue is out yet, since I rely on TKA for my fix until I can belatedly get the issues in the UK. I DO buy them, I just can't get them right away so I read them online first and THEN collect the hard copies when I have access to 'em.
But the main reason for this post is, while still Archie-related, not to do with anything current. It's odd because I never thought it could happen, but I've really started to develop an interest in Sonic and Tails' evil counterparts, Scourge and Miles. I find them absolutely fascinating. Why? Because they're still Sonic and Tails, and it's creepy how much-so. I'm really glad that they have names of their own and are no longer referred to as 'anti-' whoever, because the whole anti thing holds no water at all. They're not photo-negatives or polar opposites of their prime counterparts at all. In fact, the ONLY real difference, the only thing that's truly flipped backwards with them, is their morality. The Suppression Squad is basically the Freedom Fighters if their moral compasses were inverted. Any further differences in their personalities and actions can always be traced right back to that single anomaly. Physically, they're identical beyond superficial details (at least, would be, if not for Scourge's encounter with a large dose of Master Emerald radiation). Their abilities are the same, not in any way inverted. Scourge has his speed and the ability to attain a super-form. Miles is a genius with the power of flight. Etc etc. Even their personalities are less inverted and more just... darkened. Scourge isn't the opposite of Sonic - he's not introverted or quiet or depressive. In fact, he's just as slick and energetic, only his trademark grin is tainted with dark energy rather than Sonic's bright good-naturedness. There's something very very creepy about how much they actually are alike. Scourge really IS Sonic, just Sonic without compassion or remorse. And given that Sonic is an unstoppable force of good whose determination and energy know no bounds, it's scary to imagine a version of him with the VERY SAME determination and energy but allied with the path of evil instead. I really can't imagine that there'd be anything he would be beyond doing, no matter how sick or twisted. And that's... well, I can't help being fascinated. I'm also drawn in by his relationship with the rest of the SS, particularly Miles. Miles is really interesting too, because he's Tails. Even the fact that he's so vocal about his objection to being compared to his prime counterpart is just so... typical of Tails' need for independence and fear of being seen as weak or useless. And although he's more measured and broody than Tails in his attitude, his banter with Scourge is so similar... the very same sarcastic quipping and jabbing at each other, just completely devoid of their prime versions' brotherly playfulness. All of it's there, just without any of the heart that forms bonds and loyalty between the Mobius Prime Freedom Fighters. They'd sell each other out in an instant, yet fate seems to have decided that no matter how many times they betray each other, their paths will keep crossing. Which leads me to something I ponder on - while I have no doubt whatsoever that Scourge and/or Miles would have no problem with fatally wounding or outright killing someone, and would probably get a sick pleasure from it... could Scourge kill Miles, or vice-versa? The logical answer seems to be 'yes', because there's absolutely no loyalty or compassion there at all to stand in the way. Lord knows they've both tried. They hate each other and I'm sure they both spend plenty of time imaging (and attempting!) the death of each other. But if they ever succeeded, I think whoever was left would fall apart. Oddly, they seem to need each other. In some strange, perverse, twisted way... they're probably the best friends either of them has ever had. They know each other so well; how to use each other, how to exploit each other's weaknesses, how to drive each other insane. Their power struggle and absolute disgust for each other necessitates an inescapable bond that seems to be pretty much a standard for all versions of Sonic and Tails. Whether they're best friends or can't stand the sight of each other, they're still Sonic and Tails, and they still balance each other out in a strange harmony that, to me, seems just as potent as the whole "there must always be a Robotnik for Sonic to fight" dealie that we've been shown in the comic's past.
tl;dr - Scourge and Miles aren't opposites of Sonic and Tails. They're actually scarily similar with only ONE major deviation - a completely inverted moral compass. Everything else really is just so much the same that it both scares and fascinates me (and damn, I... think Scourge is hot, even though my stomach twists a little to think of it. He's still Sonic... and yeah... brain-ache.).
As an addendum, we now have Scourge, Miles, Fiona (x.x!) and Adult Link dollfie dolls to add to our current collection which now lists as follows:
Sonic:- Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Sally, Bunnie, Antoine, Rotor, Amy, Holo!Nicole, Scourge, Miles, Fiona
Batman:- Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Alfred Pennyworth
At Swim, Two Boys:- Doyler Doyle, Jim Mack
Pokémon:- Jessie, James, Meowth
Zelda:- Young Link, Adult Link
Aaand I _think_ that's it.

Date: 2010-03-01 12:42 pm (UTC)As someone who hasn't read a Sonic Comic since like 3 or 4 years ago, I started to read your post, but when I got to "Sally and Khan as a couple" my brain froze and I've been unable to form any coherent thoughts until just now.

Date: 2010-03-01 04:05 pm (UTC)Of course... I have a fascination with villains to begin with... but Scourge particularly because of how he's Sonic if he'd gone totally and horribly wrong. But more importantly than that?
He loves being that way.
Which I think is a big thing a lot of people miss in Scourge's character. He's nearly identical to Sonic in every way except he's completely opposite in morals and motivations. And a lot of that stems from the fact that he dang well likes being an evil, manipulative, homicidal tyrant.
I think the one thing that peeves me when people get into writing Scourge or whatever is they either make him 'secretly a good guy who just had a hard past' which okay, hard past sure, but he's -not- secretly a good guy. But they also forget that Scourge actually -does- have a heart. Which is WHY his team keeps turning on him. They think he's weak for it. But there's a huge difference between having a heart and being a good guy. You can care for people and still be an evil bastard. |D
So in regards to your post specifically? I think Scourge would hesitate on killing Miles. Just like I think he'd hesitate in killing ANY of his Suppression Squad. Though I don't think any of them would hesitate in return. Even Miles. But I think Miles is also very aware that so long as Scourge is around, the others have someone to channel their hate and mutiny into. Which leaves him free to manipulate them ALL into getting what he wants.
....
tl;dr Carrie thinks about characters in the comics too much. \D orz

Date: 2010-03-01 04:18 pm (UTC)Thinking about it, maybe you're right. Miles might be able to kill Scourge, but I think if he ever did, he'd be pretty messed up about it afterwards. Even if only for the lack of stability and order it would throw up. Scourge may be a total loose canon, but he's also pretty predictable, which is why Miles was able to betray him so easily. And since Miles is Tails, just evil, I think he still kind of relies on Scourge to be there and would be kinda lost without him ^^; (Why do I find that disturbingly cute? x.x)
Anyway, yeah XD;; Thinking too much about characters in comic books is fun.

Date: 2010-03-01 09:15 pm (UTC)What I mean is...You probably already know this, but I reached a moment where I was totally burnt out the Sonic franchise and could neither stand the series or the character of Sonic himself.
I'd regressed to a childhood Nintendo zombie state of thinking Sonic was just a annoying smug smirk, and nothing more.
Scourge, ironically enough, has been one of those things that has been helping me enjoy Sonic has a character again. I can say I didn't find the character irritating in some ways, especially when he story arc dragged on for nearly a year. Still, I guess I can sum up my feelings about him like this: "I don't like anything about you, but I still love you."
Scourge is everything I view as being wrong with Sonic as a character taken to the greatest extreme...but somehow, for reasons I'm not sure of, I still truly care about him. Like you said, in the end, Scourge is still Sonic. And for better or worse, it seems as I will always find something to empathize with in Sonic, no matter how exaggerated his personal weaknesses become.
Scourge also gives me a chance to have more faith in myself. I've done a lot of hating in my life and at times have doubts in my ability to forgive. And yet I feel like Scourge could rape and torture me, and I'd more than likely still value him as a friend, even through my anger and pain.
I guess I see a bit of Miles' insecurity in myself, when I think about it. He seems like the kind of person who is overly concerned about what people think about him, and in some ways, though I've been trying to get better, I take the notion of people taking me seriously a bit too seriously.

Technically, "evil Sonic" showed up first waaay back in issue #19 as you might already know. But he first becomes "Scourge" in #161 (I think?). You could also read the later arc starting around #190-ish. Ahhhh it's hard to keep up ^^;
Anyway, you need an account to download the comics but it's worth it :) Hope that helps!
