La la la Wikipedia is fun XD;;
Jul. 21st, 2008 11:07 pmSo, the procedure I'm having done on Wednesday is a skin biopsy. Specifically, an excisional biopsy, where (being small) they remove the entire lesion in one go. With a scalpel. Yikes!
So I'm wondering if I shouldn't be looking up this stuff. I'm trying to reassure myself so that I know what's going on, but I think all I'm effectively doing is adding stock to my already mounting terror. I mean, I know that in the grand scheme of things this is, literally, only minor surgery... but still, I'm a wimp.
There, I said it.
I'm a wimp. I have next to zero tolerance for things-that-cause-me-pain. If you ever want to see a 23-year-old curled up under the bed whimpering for 'mummy', come see me on Wednesday morning >.> They'll have to drag me out by my tail(s?).
Yet now, I'm sitting here relatively calm. 'Cause I'm thinking... this is yucky, but if it's the worst thing to happen to me in a while, then I'm a really lucky person. Having a skin biopsy is a drop in the ocean compared to what some people have to go through to have any reasonable standard of living. Besides, I don't even need to be admitted to hospital; it's all done in the outpatients clinic. It's a routine procedure, done under local anaesthetic, and it won't take long at all. Thinking about it is probably the worst part of it, anyway. Knowing all of this doesn't quell my terror much (hey come on, who actually looks forward to having their flesh sliced deliberately with a scalpel while they're still fully conscious? :P), but it helps me to keep things in perspective.
I know there's some people on my friends list who probably wouldn't have even posted about having something as minor and inconsequential as this done (except maybe in passing - "Oh yeah, and I had a lump cut out on my arm today, anyway see ya Journal!")... so yeah, apologies if I've just gone on about it way too much... but like I said, I'm a wimp :) And a pretty sheltered one at that.
...
Oh crap. I just ate a whole 150g bag of honey roasted peanuts D: Bam goes my diet. Oh well ^^;

Date: 2008-07-21 10:41 pm (UTC)Best is to just not look and try to relax, you will feel the first needle of the aneasthetic (naturally) but that's it.
It's not so abd as it sounds :)
I had a bone marrow puncture done while being conscious, and for that they also make an incision in the local tissue before they use a small drill to take a sample of the bone marrow.
Now of the incision and the needle/drill entering I felt nothing at all.
(after it reached the bone it was a different matter, but they can't use aneasthetic for the bone or the inside of it...only the surrounding tissue)
In either case, you are in luck it's all located pretty much on the skin/surface, so it's actually quite easy to give aneasthetic and remove with no or very little pain.
It's very likely you won't notice it, but even if it doesn't hurt I wouldn't like watching it myself either.
To be honest, watchign would make me queezy too :\

Date: 2008-07-22 02:12 am (UTC)Anyway, you're not a wimp. You've never had anything like this done before and it's scary. ;_; nuu one would blame you for being nervous about it. But it's gonna go fine n.n I'm sure of it.
Yay for peanuts!

Date: 2008-07-22 11:10 pm (UTC)Anyway, I don't blame you for looking it up - it sounds like what I would do. XD (Like recent attempts to self-diagnose.) I find all this stuff fascinating, though - every time I get blood drawn I'm all 'oooooooo o.o'.
But for you - don't watch. You won't feel it with the local anesthetic so go... I dunno, mentally surf fanart at ZoomSwish? Yeah, that sounds good.
Good luck!

Date: 2008-07-22 11:36 pm (UTC)I don't think there's any shame in talking about your fear, though. Really better to let it out than to hold it in. And really, the only reason you're afraid of this is because you don't understand it. I think you'll feel a lot better once it's over with.
